How to Choose the Right Size Dog Collar or Harness
Share
When it comes to your dog’s comfort and safety, size really does matter. Choosing the right size collar or harness ensures your pooch can move freely without discomfort — and prevents the risk of them slipping out of poorly fitted accessories.
Why Getting the Fit Right Matters
Too tight, and it can chafe or restrict breathing. Too loose, and your dog could slip out unexpectedly during walks. A well-fitted collar or harness is essential for everyday comfort and control.
Measuring Your Dog
- For collars: Use a soft measuring tape around the base of your dog’s neck, where the collar will sit. You should be able to fit two fingers comfortably between the tape and your dog’s neck.
- For harnesses: Measure around the widest part of your dog’s chest, typically just behind the front legs. Also measure around the neck if using a step-in or no-pull harness style.
Refer to Our Size Guide
Each dog is unique — even within breeds. That’s why we’ve created a helpful Size Guide with measurements and fit tips across all our collar and harness types.
Breed-Specific Sizing Tips
- Small breeds like Chihuahuas or Yorkies usually need XS or S sizes with lightweight fittings.
- Medium breeds like Cocker Spaniels or French Bulldogs tend to fit M or L depending on build.
- Large breeds like Labradors or German Shepherds often require L or XL and wide straps for support.
Adjustability is Key
Always check if your collar or harness has adjustable straps — especially if your dog is still growing or between sizes. For in-between fits, we recommend sizing up and using the adjusters to tailor the fit.
